Eddystone Reef is one of England's best known dive site, located around the Eddystone Lighthouse 15km southeast of Looe and built on a group of treacherous rocks. This far outside Plymouth Sound you can dive on sheer walls, huge rocky boulders and plenty of rock gullies all decorated in the best kelp forests and unexpected rich marine life. You can spot Ross Corals, Basking Sharks, Jewel Anemones, Dogfish and a glimpse of a large 17th century anchor. Visibilities can be as good as 15 meters, especially before the end of May when the plankton arrives.
The Eddystone Lighthouse was first built in 1703 and stands 51 meters high looking out across the Atlantic. It was the first lighthouse built on a set of small rocks this far our at sea. Fishing around Eddystone Reef is also very popular as it attracts plenty of large pelagic feeding on the rich diversity below. There are huge Cod, Bass, Pollack and Coalfish to be caught. Just to let you know how popular this place is; England's National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth has devoted a special tank (Eddystone Reef Exhibit) to the life on Eddystone Reef, that shows you everything from native sharks to crabs, from flatfish to wrasses.
